Members of Shoalhaven’s South Coast Shotokan Karate club recently received the opportunity to train with the most senior instructors from Japan. Typically held in various cities around the country, this year’s Shotokan Week was held at the Rocks and the National Championships were held in Crows Nest in Sydney. The opportunity to train with karate masters from Japan occurs every year but the opportunity to train with them so close to home only happens once every few years.

Grading day is always met with a mix of nerves and excitement for members of South Coast Shotokan Karate. Demonstrating karate technique in front of a panel of black belt examiners and parents is a bit nerve-racking for all, and sometimes for the instructors on the panel too.

When it comes to learning world class karate technique there is no better place to learn than from the Japanese masters themselves. A small group from the South Coast Shotokan Karate club did just that by attending the Shotokan Karate International Australia Winter Kangeiko (training camp) in Sydney recently.

SOUTH Coast Shotokan Karate senior instructor, David Rush is confident that performances at their recent grading examination show students in the club are progressing well and some are on track to reach their black belt in due course.

Tough end of year test for karate students

More than 800 athletes from 50 countries converged on Jakarta, Indonesia for the 12th SKIF World Karate Championships from 26-28 August 2016. Entering into his third consecutive World Championships, Sensei David Rush from South Coast Shotokan Karate was determined to achieve something he had only ever dreamed of.

Sensei David will be conducting a grading examination of r junior Kyu grades at the North Nowra Dojo from 4pm to 5:30pm on Friday 22nd July.
